There are plenty of artists out there that paint grotesque scenes but when it comes to Ania Tomicka there is something different about her art. Yes, everything that you see created by her has a certain level of horror, even those sweet, big eyes, blonde girls that seem to come right from a Japanese movie.
That macabre, that grotesque and horror has a pinch of sugar added to it and this makes her art, at least at the first glance- digestible for the mainstream public that might take her for a cartoon/manga style artist, the kind that is almost kitschy to the untrained eye.
There is nothing chintzy though, on the contrary if you look with a critique eye on her artworks you’d notice the level of symbolism that she uses and the details that are sometimes astonishing.
Some modern artists would just imitate the old Masters’s style over and over again in an attempt to gain some “modern day” recognition (see for example the infinite number of flower painters that all seem to imitate the Impressionists or worse, all those portraitists that use only the Rembrandt palette or/and light). There is nothing worse than an artist without a personality (good or bad).
When it comes to Ania Tomicka though, there is plenty to discover and the personality that erupts from her paintings is just as exquisite as much as mysterious.
She graduated at the academy of Fine Arts of Florence in 2004, so as you would’ve guessed, she is a young artist that, I think, will gain international recognition.
As far as I could see she prefers “tamed” colors, not much of a contrast but this is not what makes her composition perfect. The composition is always centered around a big eyed figure of a doll face girl and the story that gives the heaviness to the entire picture is usually settled in the background.
That is the reason why the majority would think that her paintings are sweet-because they are all centered around an innocent figure. But as they say…”the Devil is in the details” and this is exactly where you should check after, of course, you got bored of those big eyes.
